MURMANSK SPACEPORT – arrival

Мурманский Космодром – прибытие
During November 2015 local musicians from Murmansk and Bodø worked together with Hilary Jeffery to play at “Murmansk Spaceport”, from where they travelled to Jupiter. A port is a place of departure and arrival, of temporary transactions and unstable conditions. Murmansk Spaceport was such an environment – designed for exploring unknown territories.
During their time there the musicians were encouraged to travel imaginatively into areas which they did not know, to explore dark territories of which they had little or no prior experience. For Hilary this meant to explore the atmosphere and mood of Murmansk in November, which for him was an unusually dark environment. Additionally he attempted to enter into the sound of Russian, a language which was unknown and new for him.
In a similar way each musician was asked to explore areas of which they were non-expert, to literally enter the dark of what was previously unknown. New channels were opened during the rehearsal process and everything was prepared for a public journey on Saturday 28 November, departing from and arriving back at Мурманский Космодром. Through this work we opened gates to new territories.
Lysn (2005 – 2015) was conceived as an ever-changing ensemble playing music for the ‘inner-space age’ – an era in which people are increasingly and inevitably turning inwards. During the creation of Murmansk Spaceport each participant experienced various stages of opening into their own unique inner-spaces and this led to a special atmosphere which allowed the audience who attended to do likewise.
